Antimicrobial resistance is a global issue and requires a joint effort worldwide to find useful strategies. The section on Antimicrobial Drug Development provides a new platform for researchers in the frontiers of antimicrobial discovery to report their exciting results and exchange ideas. This section broadly covers novel strategies that tilt the host-pathogen interaction to favor the host (humans, animals, and plants) in combating invading pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites). Specifically, the journal warmly welcomes manuscripts that provide novel insight into the following topics:

1. Identification and characterization of novel antimicrobial agents from natural sources, genome mining, and compound libraries;

2. Modification of existing antibiotics for improved drug properties;

3. Mechanism of action of antimicrobials or new targets for treatment;

4. Microbial resistance to antimicrobials and anti-resistance strategies;

5. Novel antimicrobial strategies that enhance host defense against pathogen invasion;

6. Chemical ecology and microbiota-inspired novel treatment strategies;

7. New technologies for production, formulation, in vitro and in vivo testing of antimicrobials.
